we invited players in twice before - 1/ inter league - we invited the top 10 players in the rankings into the county squad and they dropped out through lack of commitment 2/ Phil invited players in to the squad got some ill feelings from other players, some of these players stayed for one year where are they now? i would like invitations too but who makes the decision on who and then other people have other ideas on other players so we are back to square 1

Can you say,
1) retain 15 players, 2) take the top 3 from the superleague rankings (unless they have been retained already, and provided they are committed) 3) have 2 captain's picks 4) have trials for the remaining ~10 places (captain's pick after the trials).
Thr trials format is fine. At the end of the day there are lots of players all of a similar ability. I know if I went to the trials 10 times, I could qualify ~ half the time, its who performs on the day.

Do you take a good sized deposit off the selected players to make sure they are a) interested and b) turn up ?

Can you tell people before the trials that if they qualify, they must pay up on that day or lose their place to someone more interested / organised

Ian, the system isn't transparent enough. Some people get in without going to the trials (e.g. Neil Robertson, who is obviously good enough, but nonetheless didn't qualify).
This is a valid point Ed, and one which can cause a tiny amount of unrest in the squad. Also it would seem unfair to the guys who trial each year and don't make it through.
Other people like Matt and Dom qualified but they only get a few games for county, which means they quickly become disinterested.
It sounds like you don't play county Ed ?
The format of a match is such that nobody gets more than 4 frames, and some of the players will only get 2. It can be a long day for a few frames. Bear in mind that no tables are free for practice during the match so it can be a long wait between frames. Each frame is a 45 minute wait so you are cold every time you approach the table. It is single frame pool. The best players don't always win and so will be dropped at times.
Dom is not alone in missing out on some frames in some matches. In fact, most of the B squad will have missed out at some stage this season due to the fact that many of the players are about the same standard as one another.
As for people becoming disinterested, well only the fully committed players will last the season as it is a test of endurance at times.
Also, as well as qualifying through the trials, it should be possible to qualify through super league rankings as well, Ed
This has been tried Ed, it was a disaster. A smorgasbord of non-commitment and disillusionment. If you will. ;D
Not many players will turn down the offer of a county place even though some of them will have no idea of what to expect or the level of commitment required. Some of them will have never been to county trials or shown any inclination to trial.
There are, however, players who trial each year, some failing narrowly, perhaps due to an unlucky draw or a lucky opponent, who are clearly good enough. I would have no problem with some wild card picks being made available to the team manager on that basis.
Just a players opinion.
Harry the B*****d.

I'd like to pick up on a point mentioned in this thread regarding the match format as it seems to have a few parallels with the league.
Why play 4 single frame matches?
It would make much more sense to play a best of 3 format where a point is scored for the overall win, but only play 1 or 2 opponents.
Not only would this reduce the element of chance/luck from a result, but it would also allow players to get in to their game and warm up before it is over.
I don't think that this would take any more time than the current system. In fact, I know it wouldn't.

Harry the B*****d.
good use of the word 'smorgasbord' ! Fair enough. I have played county before, but not in Cambs and I don't know enoough about the way it works in Cambs to make any proper comments, just what I've picked up on the grape vine

I have not played the pool trials I was not even playing pool in january but the snooker format always used to be 4 or 5 open draw single day events with points awarded for each event, matches were best of 5 and the events were played over a 2 month period just before the start of the county season. Each event was a fiver to enter and there was prize money on the day. They were played at a different club each time taking away the home advantage of a one off qualification. At the end of the events the players with the most points were offered the county team places. This pretty much always led to the best players coming to the top but gave ample opportunity for anyone good enough to come through.

Not sure about next season it depends how the snooker/pool pendulum swings its proving difficult to play both, if anyone had said to me 6 months ago i would be playing this much pool i would have split my sides so who knows what will happen in 6 months time
