Maybe the CAPL could sponsor the under 18's to cover their costs for the coching. Any over 18's can still attend but would have to pay their way?

Surely any surplus funds in the capl treasury should be used to benefit the majority, not just a select few?

I would rather see the league concerned with matters that involve/benefit all members as far as possible. If theres such a lot of spare cash about perhaps every team should be equipped with a large display timing clock, easily visible to all players. This would be far more relevant and useful and to the benefit of all members of the CAPL. The rules state that a timer must be used, but currently this regularly opted out of and even when it is used, is open to abuse quite franky. Of course im sure this will go down like a lead balloon - so let the flaming begin! Ok, what happens when they get broke, lost or stolen? Also, the 2nd ref needs to be able to operate the timer and move about the table. How's he gonna do that with a giant clock? Stick it on a trolley and push it around? Also, not having a stopwatch/clock is rarely the reason people don't time frames. It's mostly because they can't be bothered. So they still wont be bothered to operate a giant clock that's stuck to the wall. Also, it's a terrible idea The Rock has a giant stopwatch/clock, If any one thinks this is a good idea...then head over there & give it a go, We tried using it & failed As already mentioned, that you need to operate the timer and move about the table, which don't work. I personally think it's a waste of money.

I'm in support of the coaching idea, willing to help out if I have enough spare time. I'm sure CSC would do a deal for table costs, but the CAPL should pay for them, not he players. As already mentioned, the offer of coaching should be available to all players interested in learning/improving, not just young players. By all means prioritise young players, as places will be limited, but don't write off anyone aged over 18

Looking through the posts on this thread its clear that there are two main schools of thought; improving participation/quality levels of youth pool and benefiting existing players throughout the leagues fairly.
I've only been playing for a couple of seasons but I have to say the level of skill, passion and organisation for the game across the city has been extremely impressive. In a small city like Cambridge we are capable of running a league with approximately 80 teams, but I didn't know any of this until I joined the league! In my opinion CAPL should be shouting from the rooftops about its success, not just in terms of local media but national as well. Perhaps sponsorship links could be arranged between the CAPL and the IPA or BUSA? or other affiliated sporting NBGs? Perhaps more games should be taped and put on local media sources? I don't know, these are random ideas, but the point i'm trying to make is that the CAPL is up there as one of the best pool leagues in the country and people and players from other parts of the world should be looking here and thinking this is one of the heartlands for English Pool.
By creating this kind of desire for the game, you will inevitably attract more youth interest but here is the annoying paradox in English pool; most pool tables are in venues that are age restricted but we want more youth players to be playing. I think the CSC as a training ground for youth pool is a great idea but this has to occur whilst the desire to play the game is increased for more local young players.
I guess what i'm trying to say in a very long winded way is that i think we should do both of the options in this thread, we should benefit players in our league by promoting the CAPL more vigorously and then by proxy that sustains and develops our youth system.
