Firstly well done to Rob Cork who got to the semis of the singles, going out to the eventual winner, Lee Morris. I got to the last 128 out of 350-400 entering, and in general the 15 cambridge uni players did quite well in the singles. I will only commment on the third team and leave the others to comment about their teams. The draw for the chamionship was as follows... TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP/TROPHY GROUP A GROUP B Ulster 1st [#1] Nottingham 1st [#2] St Andrews 1st Durham 1st York 2nd Edge Hill 1st Warwick 2nd St Andrews 2nd Kent 2nd Lancaster 2nd GROUP C GROUP D Essex 1st [#3] Cardiff 1st [#4] Glasgow 1st Warwick 1st Salford 1st Reading 1st Warwick 3rd Essex 2nd Cardiff 3rd Cambridge 2nd GROUP E GROUP F Cambridge 1st [#5] Queens Belfast 1st [#6] York 1st East Anglia 1st Lancaster 1st Manchester 1st Cardiff 2nd York 3rd Essex 3rd Reading 2nd GROUP G GROUP H Oxford 1st [#7] Strathclyde 1st [#8] Gloucestershire 1st Kent 1st Robert Gordon 1st Plymouth 1st Durham 2nd Edge Hill 2nd Cambridge 3rd Ulster 2nd We did incredibly well for a third team in the championship. Despite having a very tough seed, Oxford 1st, in our group we managed to top the group on points. This was helped greatly by BEATING Oxford 6-3 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This was our first match and gave us a massive boost for the rest of the group matches. Sadly, as a third team we could not enter the championship (only 1st teams). We got to go into the trophy where we had to play Ulster 2nds in the last 16. We lost . They hadn't lost a match, and went on to win the trophy. It's a bit of a shame as most tournament formats would have given us a much easier team since we finished top of our group. Also well done to Lee Mager's team (formerlly played for Cam Uni, now at LSE). They narrowly missed winning the Shield by one final missed black :s. A very good performance from the LSE side though. A great weekend of pool and all three Cambridge teams will remain in the championship next year! Really nice to play on such beautiful tables at Great Yarmouth and have four professional refs to help out with the weekend. I look forward to next year - providing my form doesn't drop! A big thanks to CAPL, since CAPL is what makes the Cambridge Uni teams so strong with regular practice against top players through the year.

IN MY OPINION
This is one of the reasons we need to give the Uni teams special treatment. To help them prepare for events and competitions like this. Increasing the standard of the opposition they play against in the CAPL will improve the Cambridge Uni chances in comps such as this.

Emm we’ve had this one before. Do the uni teams sponsor the CAPL league? What do universities give us pub teams ?
If we start to give special treatment to the uni teams but who goes up or down to make way?. Would you be happy if your team was dropped to make way for a uni team to go straight back into the league for winter when you’ve been supporting both the summer and winter seasons.
It’s a hard one to get right, but if we start messing about allowing them special treatment then the pubs teams will start to give up knowing that they might not get promoted due to the uni teams.
Let them make a team of 4 (min reqd to play) to keep in the summer & their place or two division with 11 to accomadate them.
I feel the committee has got this right this season. The A team is in the prem with the B team in Div 3 & not walking away with it either as shown by the last league update shows them forth!!.

1. we are fourth but had to postpone a game for .... BUCS championships, in which as a university we did extremely well, all three teams past the group stages and no teams having to compete in the sheild.
2. no we don't sponsor the league afaik, but i think i am fair in saying (even though biased) that cambridge university contributes jsut slightly to cambridge in all respects. without the uni would cambridge have any fame at all? it is a lovely city with great people (comparing to london where i otherwise live) but the uni students are part of the city and should not be forgotton.
3. teams would perhaps be penalised for uni-b and possibly uni-a not playing the summer league, but there are never any complaints when three teams go up for the summer league!
i give up with these forums! i either p*ss other people off or p*ss myself off! I actually am starting to feel sorry for the committee with all the problems they have to deal with.
i'm out on the town now. get away from these forums! ;-)

To be fair, I don't think any of the uni players I know would expect to be given special treatment. I've always maintained that the uni team each winter should only be allowed back into the prem if the committee thinks it's a team of the right standard - this is the same test that's applied to any other newly formed team entering the league. I think that by and large they get it right - there can only really be a complaint if the uni get entered into the prem one season and then finish in the relegation zone, which to my knowledge hasn't happened as long as I've been here Furthermore, given that the uni team drops out pretty much every summer, an extra team gets promoted that wouldn't otherwise, so it doesn't seem harsh to relegate that 'extra' team when the uni comes back in the winter...

BTW. The Uni team are a pain in the proverbial when they move fixtures. Don't join the league if you can't play the fixtures!
With regard to only playing winter and retaining your place in the Prem, I fully agree that that should happen. They should be 2 seperate leagues anyway.

Ian: I believe there was a larger problem of teams cancelling fixtures on short notice, postponing fixtures as late as they could and not informing opposing teams when they are struggling to find six players until the last acceptable moment.
Also, in the last two seasons, the uni have moved a very small number of games which is quite probably comparable to a considerable number of other teams in the league.
If captains are open about the problems they have with specific fixtures well in advance then there should be no pain at all in moving them (even by one night).

Ditto nobody should get special or preferential treatment for any reason even if camb uni sponsered the league again special treatment shouldnt be given, 4 team idea is interesting doubt its feasible though, im not fully against the uni dont get me wrong i want a league that is fair to all teams and so far as a committee we have got the uni placings correct but my only thing is should any team get to start in the higher leagues even if your a team of 6 england players you should do what other teams have to do and start at the bottom and work your way who cares if you win every game 12v0 that good happen anyway thats life obviously uni have proven themselves and thats why to a extent we should continue this evaluation of the uni teams on a seasonal basis until another maybe better or efficent method is discovered and established so please everyone think of solutions rather than just point out the flaws

I was saying I was fed up with the forums (but still feel the need to defned myself) not that they were a bad thing. Note the importance of MY THOUGHTS about MY USE. Of course they are great for results, organising practice and tournaments. 2. I feel sorry for the committee after he had to close a thread due to petty arguing (something that i seem to end up in although nowhere near as bad as that thread). I'm sure they do enjoy what they do, I am reasonably sure they don't enjoy moderating arguments on forums. 3. I don't like being called an idiot. I have never slagged off an individual, including you, on these forums.

I swear all of those shots were much more difficult than they look! Looking forward to the Cork-Lee Morris semi final being put up. In terms of quality I think that was the match of the tournament.

I love the way that in my first appearance on camera I play quite a decent safety shot and the commentator basically says 'boring' and moves back to the other table. Anyway, great weekend - thoroughly enjoyed it.

The commentators blatant bias towards Cambridge in the Cambs v Notts match is fantastic
