Coaching: - During a frame, a player is required to play without receiving any advice from other
persons relating to the playing of the frame. Should a team member or bone-fide supporter of a
player offer advice, the referee will issue a "First and Final Warning" to that person that a repetition
will result in the player being penalised via a Standard Foul.
Because it may not always be possible for the Referee to hear if a statement made to a player is
advice, the referee may issue the First and Final Warning on the grounds that any statement made
to a player, other than general barracking, is deemed to be coaching.
In a tournament setting, a First and Final warning may be given once only, before the
commencement of the day's play as a block warning to all players and spectators.
But in the Constitution its states : 3. The chairman will issue a blanket first and final warning for coaching to cover the entire season at each AGM/GM,
after which any coaching during frames should move immediately to a penalty.
So be warned!! if you inadvertently make a comment about the game in the referee earshot. Some teams in this division will, to win a game call 2 shots.

I've always thought that issuing a blanket first and final warning was ridiculous.

I've always thought that issuing a blanket first and final warning was ridiculous. I agree with you. Also how many "bone-fide supporter" know of this rule.

Just don't coach players, then you won't have a problem.

If you attended the AGM/GM you would be aware of the rule. It is given out every season

There was a situation a while back when a player deliberately coached someone to play a deliberate foul. This coaching resulted in the player winning the frame. The player doing the coaching knew what he was doing and knew he could get away with it once before being penalised. That is why the warning for coaching was issued for the entire season at the GM/AGM.

That is why the warning for coaching was issued for the entire season at the GM/AGM. That's a bit like saying there was a guy who intentionally drove over the speed limit because he knew he would only get 3 points and avoid a ban, therefore we've decided to issue everyone with 9 points immediately so anyone caught speeding gets an instant ban.

In my opinion, it is more like saying anyone that gets caught speeding gets a warning then the second time they get caught they then get three points. We, at the time, did not think it was right for someone to prosper by deliberately cheating.

We, at the time, did not think it was right for someone to prosper by deliberately cheating. I agree with you monkey if someone talked directly to a player giving him advice that is coaching. However if someone was talking about the game to a non playing team mate, and Asked the question "is that a foul snooker" and the referee overheard this and then used that to their advantage to award 2 shots so they could win that frame and then the match. Is that in the spirit of the game. bearing in mind the player knew it was a foul snooker and probably did not hear me. Also in the lower divisions if I gave 2 shots every time someone "coached" a player, we would never finish a match. for example a referee saying red/yellow in play after every shot or referee giving players advice there are lots of rules people let slide in the lower divisions. But after saying all that, I still accepted Anita's ruling.

To clarify...it was a ruling from the constitution.
If the referee hears then they are within their rights to issue the foul.

So as a referee if I hear a person talking about the frame but not sure if the player heard it, That is coaching?

I think a bit of common sense is needed.
Coaching is usually pretty obvious. If you are in any doubt then call your divisional secretary for advice...that's what they are there for.

Well said Anita!.
Just because 2 players of the same team are chatting about the game that doesn't constitute coaching especially if the player who is playing is standing over the other side of the room at the time, next you'll be saying Rex is that there's gotta be complete silence while every game is being played.

Ray read the thread, that what I am saying. I was talking to a team mate about the game the referee heard me say "is that a total foul snooker" and gave her team 2 shot after phoning some random person for advice not the divisional secretary.

It would be good if more players could somehow be encouraged to do the referee training or at least read the rules. It doesn't seem to be such a problem in the higher divisions. This forum can also be useful when people take the time to help explain often misinterpreted rules and grey areas.
As for the discussion above about coaching, it's wise to try to be discreet when discussing a current frame, especially when in close proximities and even more so if your saying words like "foul snooker" or "total snooker" within other peoples earshot, saying that though, it's not a foul I would like to call unless it was completely blatant.

It sounds hugely unfair in my opinion, surely it's more of an observation stated to someone not involved in the play of the game. Personally I'd rather win a game and match fairly rather than on a foul technicality that could be argued either way but each to their own.
