Given the poor attendance of the playoff this season (see other thread), there was a situation in which a division had no players turn up. My initial reaction to this was to consider the playoff as not played and just carry the prize money over into the pot for next season (it's £20). On reflection, this isn't fair to the eligible players in that division as prize money destined for one of them would be split between everyone if just added it to next season's pot.
An alternative suggestion was that it should go to the player who finished 5th. I don't like that idea as the playoff (despite being referred to as the 5th placed playoff in places) has nothing to do with finishing 5th. This season, players from 5th - 11th were allowed to enter the playoff and despite it being seeded, they all have an equal chance of winning imo. If nothing else, awarding it to 5th would be unfair to 6th as in the seeded playoff 5th would always have to play 6th for the money.
So, what to do?
- put the £20 into next season's pot
- give the £20 to the player finishing 5th
- try and re-organise a playoff for that division? Unless I'm at CSC anyway, I'm not going to run it as I don't have time. There is also the issue of player availability, is it fair if only a few of the 6 eligible players can make it? It could work though.
- split the money between the eligible players, a massive £3.33 each!
- put the £20 into next season, but have it only available to that division. Next season would have a doubled prize fund for the playoff.
For me, one of the last 3 options would make the most sense.
