A few seasons back a playoff format was introduced to the singles league that was available to up to 6 players from 5th down. The idea behind it was to encourage players to play all their matches (and try in them!) as they could only enter if all matches were complete. Prize money varies from £20 - £50 depending on division and number of players entering that season.
The reason for this thread is because the last playoff had poor attendance (5 out of 24 players) and I wanted to check if a playoff is still needed? The playoff was organised on a bank holiday weekend, which wasn't ideal, but trying to fit it in at the end of a month and avoid other pool related events isn't easy. I'm not convinced the scheduling was the only issue, as a handicap pool event was run on the bank holiday Monday and attracted over 20 players - some of which couldn't make the Sunday.
The playoff takes most of my day, whether it's 2 players or 20 players turning up. I still like the idea of a playoff as CSC let us use the tables for free, so if nothing else, it's good practice, not to mention a chance to win some money against players of a similar standard. I guess the options are;
- leave it as it is. Not everyone likes to play pool on a weekend, so good weather will always see less turn up.
- change the prize money to be 1st - 5th, no playoff
- consider changing the day. The only real choices are Saturday and Sunday. Saturday has been even more problematic when trying to miss other events, which is why Sunday was chosen. Could look at using a weekday, but that won't work for everyone, is really bad for me and has no guarantee CSC would allow free tables on a day they can easily hire them out.
If the playoff continues, I'll need to make an effort to provide a month notice. This season it was posted on here 2 weeks before and reminders sent to players a few days before - perhaps that wasn't enough notice?
