In our match last night, the opposition captain had a go at both refs, as he believed it was a foul for the player to retrieve the cue ball from the tray following an in-off. He told me it was in the rules and I told him, you'd be a tw*t to call it. I've read the rules, and it clearly states that it is not a foul. So please try and remember this everybody!.

The amount of times this comes up is staggering. I believe the team you played last night actually called this foul in div 5/7 before I joined Mickey's.
I can't understand where the 'rule' would come from? I understand a foul for catching it in the pocket but to retrieve from a tray?

I would like to point out that it was not our captain that raised this issue, I am captain and was ref in this game and saw that no offence had taken place therefore no foul was called.

Always used to be stated in the rules that the ref was to retrieve the cue ball, place on table and call time running... guess it got changed.
Just goes to show how often the rules are getting changed without any real knowledge being passed out to those amateur leagues that use the rules, like the fact that the break is now timed, didn't know that 1 until just checked the rules again.

I'm pretty sure your meant to hand the cue ball to the player not put it on the table

Responsibility of the cue ball dictates start of clock/visit. Either self extraction from tray, passed into hand or placed on table. I think this has always been the case even pre-world rules in epa rules. However, I am sure there could be a way to take the wording for any nal retarda to interpret in there own special way!

What we where told at the Referees course was to hand the white ball to the player unless they walk away to look at there first shot then place the white ball on bulk cushion and time running .

As a ref you need to keep the frame moving, if the player doesn't exract and neither the ref does, the player can keep looking around off clock. Not a rules issue though.
