Just curious about n issue, so thought i'd ask the experts... and players!
If you are the ref, and a foul snooker situation arises, the player calls foul snooker and moves the white, then nominates his opponents ball as a free ball, not realising he can still see one of his own balls further down the table. As the ref, should you stop him and tell him he can't nominate the ball, or let him play it, then call a foul?
Like i said, just a curious thing...

He needs to re call the foul snooker and the ref should say if it is still or not and therefore won't be able to nominate the free ball, but if the player doesn't and nominates it the ref should allow him to play it and procede by calling a foul. The ref stopping him could deem the outcome of the frame and is a future act.
That's what I would do anyway I'm sure others will have opinions.

After calling a total foul snooker and the ref moves the white he should then recall a total foul snooker and the ref can say yes or no. But if after the white is moved he plays the free ball this is foul

I agree with JD too - the referee shouldn't respond to nominations which aren't legal, and if he steps in to prevent a foul that could be called as coaching. It's also worth pointing out that the referee should confirm a properly nominated free ball. In fact, it's a foul to play a shot without waiting for the referee's confirmation, see www.epa.org.uk/wrulguid.php 14.2. In general, if you say something to a referee and he doesn't respond it's usually a clue that something's wrong.
