You can now register for the 2012/2013 8-Ball Singles League at Cambridge Snooker Centre. Registration forms are at CSC now and you can register until Friday 14th September. The league itself will start on the 1st October. The registration fee is £30 and must be paid in cash at CSC, do not give your money to singles league organisers. You need to fill in a short form (name / mobile number). You will get a receipt with a registration number on it, it is your receipt and proof you've paid the registration fee. Registration is first come first served as we will cap entry numbers at 56 to provide 4 divisions of equal numbers. If we get 70 entries before the deadline, we will run 5 divisions, but this isn't guaranteed. We encourage all players to join the CAPL forum (or facebook group at www.facebook.com/groups/singlesleague/) so they can keep up to date throughout the season and be contacted if necessary. Updates will also be posted on the noticeboard in CSC (behind table 21, next to the display cabinet), but we will only SMS players with information specific to them, not general announcements. The rules will be finalised soon and a copy posted on this forum.

£30 seems a bit steep (for someone as crap as I am), what does this cover? and are there any other costs involved or is the pool free like in the leagues?
Also 4 divisions? Does that mean there'll be 4 winners at the end or will 1 person have to beat all?

HA! I play golf all the time because the days where it was an elitist's sport are over thank F. So it seems only the rich can play in pool matches now, what a joke!

It costs £30 to register and ~£5 per match giving you a season cost of ~£95. The season lasts 7 months, 2 matches per month and last season was a total of 156 frames of pool. Some players use the league to get competitive match practice, but if you prefer to pay 50p - £1 a frame in a pub with no chance of prize money that's fine. Prize money paid out last season can be found at cambridgepool.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=singlesgeneral&action=display&thread=7638

The fact that there's plenty of interest from all levels of players in this competition clearly shows that it is a format that works well. Personally I think the singles league is one of the least elitist and best value for money pool competitions in Cambridge. The fact you personally can't afford it is by the by, although there's nothing stopping you running your own 30pence entry singles league in parallel is you so wish. The actual truth regarding elitism in 8ball pool is that it is severely biased towards the amateurs with most professionals banned from entering events or handicapped out of them. This is exactly why many professionals over recent years have opted to abandon their pro status for the more lucrative world of amateur pool. Not EVERY competition should be aimed at those with little money in their pocket. And as you can tell from my reply, I do find it annoying that as soon as someone runs a competition that's not run for the 'lesser' or 'poorer' players of this world some all come out and moan about it.

Yo Ollie
Sometimes i think you need to engage your brain before posting.
How is pool elitist? You have just said you can go down CSC on any Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday and play at half price. This competition is £30 to enter and roughly £70 in table fees making it approx' £100 over eight months. It is good competiition against players who you don't normally play. Hopefully of a similar standard. You also get to meet new people. Also, all of the entry money and a percentage of the table fees are distributed back out in prize money. Not sure of the rules this season (ahem Darren), but in previous years, if you finished in the top five you got some prize money. Nobody is making any money out of this. The people running the competition do so out of the goodness of their hearts.

How is £30 steep? It's a money league. How cheap do you want it. What does £30 get you nowadays? If you're lucky 3 pints and a packet of pork scratchings at the Run!
