This event used to attract 80+ people. Why have the numbers dropped so low?
Could it be because the race lengths have gone up?
Should it be free entry with no prize money?

This event used to attract 80+ people. Why have the numbers dropped so low? Could it be because the race lengths have gone up? Should it be free entry with no prize money? For me, it is either like this year, because Camb Utd are at home (I think this will also prevent several others from entering) or because I am working. Lots of other things are done on a Saturday, too. Would it be better held on a Sunday? I am also not too fussed about it as it is not handicapped, so my chances are slim to say the least. £6 doen't bother me , but it is a lot for many people, especially if they have little chance of progressing. Making it free could attract more of us lesser mortals as we have nothing to lose, but would it attract the bigger guns, who may be motivated by the prize money?

Not entering a comp because you think you have zero chance of winning is pretty pathetic IMO. You don't improve by playing people worse than you.

Pathetic is a bit strong...
Alot of people play in the CAPL play pool just to have a few beers and play competitive pool against players of similar ability; not just hand over money to the elite.

Maybe because most people realize they have zero chance of winning! Maybe there is a lot of truth to what you have said as I have asked a few people in the lower leagues and they have said the same answer,I don't know if it has been suggested before but couldn't there be a division open and then each winner progress to a final where there would be an open champion.Surely by doing this it would generate more interest and give maybe a lower league player a chance to play the prem div champ in the final that's if of course they got there! lol.

Yeah, all you people that don't fancy giving up one of your precious days off, just to stand around for hours, so you can have your ass handed to you by a player umpteen times better than you are.And pay for the privalage. Hang your heads in shame!

Ross some people just play pool for there own enjoyment and are not particularly interested in entering the open to get destroyed by one of the favourites.... I agree something needs to be done about the open and lack of entries!!

Similar to the way the captains cup is run?

The only problem with making the open like the captains cup is your swaying towards another handicap open and i dont think numbers are great there either. Also the open winner unless it has changed has a chance to represent the capl in yarmouth. I think newbie is right that most people play to have a few beers and a laugh which is why you see a lot of ex prem players playing in lower leagues nowadays.

Yeah not sure how you get more people involved in the Open. Maybe by splitting abilities into different groups in early rounds then bringing them together in later stages?

I thought it's always been the singles winner/R'up that goes to Yarmouth not the open? Handicap open is on a Sunday, who wants to play in an all day comp with work the next day!!

It is the Singles winner and open winner from each season that qualify to go to Yarmouth.
We discussed the low numbers that attended the open at our committee meeting last night. We have a few ideas and will discuss it at a future meeting.
I agree we need to increase numbers so we will take steps to try to do this.
